Lessons From a Classic Photo

When a great photographer and a classic photo can't be named, does that tell us anything about our public education system? Why is it famous painters come to mind, but photographers whose work is often as great, if not greater, are hard to recall? Click here to see how a question about W. Eugene Smith's famous photo, "Walk to a Paradise Garden," gave rise to that question.

Adobe's CS3 Launch

For a lot of photographers (particularly those with Intel Macs), buying Photoshop CS3 is a no-brainer, but Adobe's launch was about much more than a photo editor. Is Photoshop Extended really necessary? What are those different packages all about? Why should we care about program integration? And is this upgrade really worth what they're asking? iClip 4 Mini-Review

The bottom line is that iClip is a very elegant, typically-Mac application. It's a great tool that I'm sure I'll enjoy using every single day. I can't believe it's taken me so long to actually give it a try. Do you use iClip? If you do, click here to access Netscape's Gadgets and Gear Community and tell us how you use it! There you can also access a screenshot of iClip 4.

Photographer Censored in Afghanistan

When the military deletes photos and video in a war zone, what are we to think? Were they trying to hide something? Were they shooting at civilians? Or were they concerned that those images could keep them from accomplishing their mission? Should we give our folks in uniform the benefit of the doubt? Tell us what you think!

Alien Skin's Exposure Versus B/W Styler!

Alien Skin's Exposure mimics color and B&W films, but a cheaper B/W Styler is impressive, too! Andrew Bokelman brought B/W Styler to our attention. It's clearly a contender in the digital color to B&W conversion category. At under $50, the price seems right, as well! But Exposure does offer a lot more value in the color department. Canon's New EOS 1D Mark III - sRAW?

Canon's new EOS 1D Mark III looks like a winner, but I'm a little curious about this new sRAW file format: "In addition to the RAW and JPEG options found in previous EOS Digital SLRs, the EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR now offers the "sRAW" recording format. "sRAW" has all the flexibility of standard RAW data recording, but at one quarter the resolution and approximately half the file size of conventional RAW images...." Is that new format a big deal? Tell us what you think!

Returning to Film

When he had to shoot a large group for a big print, Mike decided to dust off his Mamiya RB 6x7. He was concerned that his trusty Canon 1Ds wouldn't quite do the job. Was he wrong? Later in the discussion, the subject moved to High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI). Given you can process a RAW image in various ways, could you be better off shooting digital? Check out this interesting exchange!

Choosing an LCD Monitor

Fran's question about getting an LCD monitor sparks a lively discussion. Is Dell's bargain monitor going to live up to her expectations for working on photographs? Is there something as good or better out there for less money? Share your thoughts!
