Going Digital
Why not ISO 3200?
06/29/08 11:54
Many cameras can automatically change ISO settings
depending on the lighting conditions, but when you’re
in control, Cal asks, “Why would I want to take
pictures at ISO 100 when the camera can let me set
its sensitivity to 800 or 3200?” See what he was told!

Keeping Digital Photos Safe
11/19/07 09:08
SentrySafe makes hard drives that would survive flood
and fire. Should you own one? How about a safe that
has a USB passthrough? Going digital means backing up
photos, offline and/or offsite storage, etc. What is your plan to keep your
digital photos safe?
Betty's First Digital Camera
11/05/07 12:32
Betty is getting her first digital camera and gets
some great shopping advice. There's no end to the
choices available. The good news is, it's hard to go
too far wrong, but to get the best return on your
camera dollar, you need to get some advice from folks
who've been where you are. If you're shopping for a
camera or know someone who is, click here!

10/16/07 10:39
Jeff took time to shoot some nice photos of a like he
passes on his way to work, but when it came time to
make a big print, he discovered he mistakenly set the
camera to sRAW. He ponders that there might be too
many options! What
do you think?

to 18x), what do you give up? There are lots of
ultra-zoom cameras to choose from, but do any of
these wonder-digitals really deliver the goods? John

PowerShot S3-IS. Share your thoughts! See what others

Do memory cards wear out?
06/23/07 14:36
Howard Fisher asks the question, "Do memory cards
wear out?" The reply: Yes, memory cards can wear out
after formatting them thousands of times, but it's
more likely there's a problem with the camera's
contacts. Try cleaning them with alcohol, but be
careful, else you'll do more harm than good! Click here to read more!

Nikon's NX and Photoshop? Isn't this inefficient?
05/10/07 08:19
Ron Wrucke likes NX and is used to the interface, but
he's finding it cumbersome to move from that software
into Photoshop for additional image work. Is he missing something?
Getting started with Lightroom?
04/30/07 13:51
Anyone with a large collection of digital photos
could benefit from the organizational capabilities of
a program like Adobe Lightroom, but figuring out the
best way to start building the database may not be
obvious to you. Jeff asks some great questions on
this topic. Do you have some questions of your
own?
Camera phones versus a dSLR?
04/30/07 13:42
Obviously, a camera in the hand is better than one
that's at home in an equipment bag, so at least from
that perspective, a camera phone can easily beat a
dSLR, but are they competitive where it counts, in
image quality? A post points to some iffy samples and
solicits comments. Take a look and share what you
think.

04/18/07 09:57
Alien Skin Software today released Macintosh
Universal updates for all their Photoshop plug-ins:
Snap Art, BlowUp, Exposure, Eye Candy 5: Textures,
Eye Candy 5: Nature, Eye Candy 5: Impact, Xenofex 2,
Image Doctor, and Splat!. These updates are
compatible with the upcoming Photoshop CS3 release
from Adobe Systems, Inc. Alien Skin’s Universal
plug-ins provide a significant performance increase
on Intel-based Macintosh computers. For any
photographer using a new Intel Mac, this is good
news! Click here for more details.
Adobe's CS3 Launch
03/28/07 12:44
For a lot of photographers (particularly those with
Intel Macs), buying Photoshop CS3 is a no-brainer,
but Adobe's launch was about much more than a photo
editor. Is Photoshop Extended really necessary? What
are those different packages all about? Why should we
care about program integration? And is this upgrade
really worth what they're asking? Click here to join the

Snap Art vs Virtual Painter
03/22/07 13:45

Alien Skin's Exposure Versus B/W Styler!
03/07/07 21:17
Alien Skin's Exposure mimics color and B&W films,
but a cheaper B/W Styler is impressive, too! Andrew
Bokelman brought B/W Styler to our attention. It's
clearly a contender in the digital color to B&W
conversion category. At under $50, the price seems
right, as well! But Exposure does offer a lot more
value in the color department. Click here to read the whole
discussion!
Canon's New EOS 1D Mark III - sRAW?
03/02/07 08:06
Canon's new EOS 1D Mark III looks like a winner, but
I'm a little curious about this new sRAW file format:
"In addition to the RAW and JPEG options found in
previous EOS Digital SLRs, the EOS-1D Mark III
Digital SLR now offers the "sRAW" recording format.
"sRAW" has all the flexibility of standard RAW data
recording, but at one quarter the resolution and
approximately half the file size of conventional RAW
images...." Is that new format a big deal? Tell us what you think!
Choosing an LCD Monitor
03/02/07 07:54
Fran's question about getting an LCD monitor sparks a
lively discussion. Is Dell's bargain monitor going to
live up to her expectations for working on
photographs? Is there something as good or better out
there for less money? Share your thoughts!
Vertus Tech's Fluid Mask Plug-In
02/16/07 08:00
Linda Baldwin shows off her first attempt at masking
a background with this new, highly-rated tool. "Built
as a plug-in to Adobe Photoshop, Fluid Mask is the new
next-generation cut-out tool. Behind the product
is breakthrough technology that mimics the way
the eye, optic-nerve and brain perform visual
processing. It offers an intuitive, accurate and
fast approach to cut outs." See what Linda did!
Nikon Capture NX 1.1.0
02/16/07 07:56
Mike Campos points to the new release from Nikon. Ron
Wrucke suggests everyone would benefit from seeing
the 4 short tutorials that demonstrate the power of
Nikon's "control point technology." Simply put, you
have the option to process selected areas differently
in a non-destructive fashion. Join the discussion!
Why Lightroom?
02/05/07 21:29
Mike Campos muses, "I went to the Epson Print Academy
this weekend and Adobe did a demonstration on
Lightroom. I liked what I saw when it comes to image
cataloging, tagging, etc. I just wish they would have
stopped at that and left the half-baked image
processing off to be done in Photoshop." Join the discussion!
A good, cheap macro setup?
02/05/07 21:23
Jeff Peterman has a friend who is breeding fancy
mice. She wants to photograph them, so she'd like
advice on a macro setup. Jeff writes, "Obviously, I
could easily recommend a dSLR and a macro lens (or
some other lens with a close-up filter or extension
tubes), plus a good external flash, but that would
cost more than she wants to spend. So, I wondered if
anyone can recommend some other, cheaper
combination?" Click here to join the
discussion!
